How to Measure Your Dog for Clothes

For most clothing items, sizes are given for the length from collar to base of tail. This measurement, in inches, will help you choose the correct size. We've provided some measurements below that are typical for their breeds. It is always best to measure your dog yourself to allow for variations among individuals.

Neck and chest measurements may also be necessary. When measuring neck and chest, be sure the measuring tape is flat but not tight to measure the exact circumference of your dog's neck or chest. Do not "add a little" to allow for the fit of the garment.

  • Neck - Measure at the base of the dog's neck where the collar normally sits

  • Chest - Measure behind the front legs at the fullest part of the chest

Most dog clothing items are made only for smaller breeds up to 30 lbs., and some can run small. When in doubt, choose the next size larger.

Consider not only measurements, but build. Some breeds can be difficult to fit because of challenges such as deep chest, slender head, thick neck or short legs. Consider the garment and use the "hard-to-fit" measurement to select your size. For example, on a Dachshund, use the length from collar to tail. For a pug, use chest measurement. For a dog with a slender build you may want to choose a smaller size.
